I've been thinking about refinishing my Strat and painting it in the orange & light blue from the Gulf GT40.

This gets me wondering if there's a guitar out there with curves and solid shapes more fitting to a 917 or GT 40. I don't think a Strat's it, though the result is indeed nice.

Do it! I want my strat to get worn over the years, but I'd like to refinish a different one at some point.

Like a Gretsch Bo Diddley? :)

I don't know. For me, I usually like guitars in "natural" or earthy tones. But with strats, I feel like they can get away with a lot more as far as custom paint goes. I have strange preferences, though.

Just make sure to use nitrocellulose lacquer, and it will start to wear in. stewmac.com has the stuff.

Actually, I just gotta play it more. It's getting set up properly this month (by the guy who made that Gulf strat, actually) so that there is a higher possibility of that.

It's an easy decision to do it, just can't quite decide 100% on the color. It's a MIM Strat, so it has that thick polyester finish that comes off with a heat gun. I'm considering a matte gold finish like a Les Paul goldtop too. Decision, decisions...

An Explorer has almost the right kind of shape to pull it off, I'd say. What'd be absolutely perfect would be a semi-hollow body with smooth lines and NACA duct holes instead of f-holes.

Yeah, but I can't think of a semi-hollow that I would paint. Not a big fan of the explorer but it would probably look good.

It would need to be some kind of space-agey semi-hollow. Enough "non-classical" cues that it wouldn't scream "I am made of wood!"

I thought maybe Ovation made one that was sufficiently bizarro, and maybe they do *if* the f-holes are discounted.

They also make the iDea (wut) which I didn't know about until today:

If one were to adopt a solid guitar as a good start for a Gulf livery, I think a Breadwinner/Deacon or Magnum might be best.
